AI is simply a tool. Like a concordance. Or a lexicon. Or a commentary. The user of AI supplies the prompt to get AI working to exegete a Scripture passage.
This morning (Tuesday, Sept 20, 2025), I supplied ChatGPT with the following prompt: “Provide an exegesis of Matthew 12:43–45, keeping it:
Structured, pastoral yet scholarly tone,
Christ-centered and Gospel-exalting
Grounded in biblical context
Attention to key Greek words and metaphors
And this is the exegesis ChatGPT produced:
“When the unclean spirit goes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So shall it be with this evil generation.” (ESV)
1. Immediate Context
Jesus is addressing a religiously active but spiritually empty generation—particularly the Pharisees who verbally profess devotion to God but reject His Messiah. They demand signs (v.38), yet are blind to the One standing before them. This warning follows His teaching about inner transformation and true allegiance.
2. Key Symbols and Greek Insights (I really liked this portion!):
| Symbol / Phrase | Greek Term | Meaning & Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Unclean spirit | πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον | A demonic force opposed to God’s holiness. For Jesus, the spiritual realm is real and active. |
| Waterless / arid places | δι᾽ ἀνύδρων τόπων | Traditionally seen as haunts of demons—symbolizing barren religiosity without living water (cf. John 7:38-this is a crucial Scripture). |
| House swept and set in order | σεσαρωμένον καὶ κεκοσμημένον | Outward morality and religious reform — clean with orthodox doctrine and being “good gospel-keeping” people, but “denying the power thereof” (2 Tim 3:5) |
| Empty (scholastically critical) | σχολάζον | Unoccupied, vacant — not indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Neutrality is impossible. |
3. The Core Message: Deliverance & Forgiveness through the Gospel Without the Indwelling Spirit of God and of Christ is Dangerous
Jesus is not merely talking about demon possession — He is exposing the danger of superficial spiritual reform. Even “gospel-based, Christ-centered” profession!
A person may:
✔️ Break addictive habits
✔️ Adopt religious behavior (“speaking the gospel to self”)
✔️ Clean up their external life
…but without Christ enthroned within and the real presence of His Spirit, believers remain spiritually empty and vulnerable to “giving a foothold to the devil” (Eph 4:27).
Freedom from sin without union with Christ leaves the soul unguarded.
Vacancy invites invasion. This is super critical!!! How real is the Lordship of Christ in our lives? Do our lives reflect Gal 2:20? Do our words, especially when we are least aware of them, reflect the presence of the Spirit of God and of Christ in us, influencing and informing our every thought and feeling?
4. Theological Insight
This passage reveals that:
- There is no spiritual neutrality. One is either filled with the Spirit or left open to darkness.
- Mere moralism is not salvation. The Pharisees were “swept and ordered” — but unconverted. The temple was clean…and EMPTY!
- Regeneration is not about emptying but filling — not just casting out sin, but Christ entering in. And living His Life in us through the Person and Presence of His Spirit, in a beautiful Father-child Divine-human relationship of “salt and light”, living a life that makes the gospel so attractive to the people around us (Tit 2:1-10)
5. Christ-Centered Application
- Christ is not an accessory to self-improvement; He is the indwelling Lord. He must rule as the King of the kingdom in our lives.
- The gospel is not behavior modification but heart occupation.
- The real question is not “Have I cleaned my life up?” but “Who lives in me?” (Gal 2:20)
Jesus does not come to renovate the house.
He comes to take the throne.
6. Warning to “This Generation”
Jesus ends with: “So shall it be with this evil generation.”
Israel had witnessed deliverance (exodus, prophets, miracles), yet refused to receive the Deliverer Himself to dwell within them in a day to day, vital and salvific relationship.
Likewise today, churches (not just “mainstream”, but especilly “Christ-centered, gospel-centered” ones are filled with religious order, orthodox doctrine, but spiritually vacant without the Resurrected Christ dwelling vitally through His Spirit, and these churches are not safe — they are haunted houses waiting to be repossessed
Conclusion
Matthew 12:43–45 is a sobering contrast between religious reformation and true regeneration. Christ is not saying:
“Clean yourself, and I will come.”
He is saying:
“Invite Me in — only My presence keeps darkness out.”
The time is TODAY. Work out our salvation with fear and trembling because it is God who works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure (Phil 2:13)
