The Secret and Hidden Wisdom of God

·

In 1 Cor 2, we have verses 1 to 7 that teaches of the “secret and hidden wisdom of God“. In this passage, the Holy Spirit teaches of an impartation of the “secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.”

  1. Simply reading this verse in the revelation of the Spirit can blow our natural cognitions away! “For our glory”? Isn’t that point astounding?
  2. This “secret and hidden wisdom of God” was decreed, which is a strong word to mean that God had meant it through an explicit command that believers’ glory rests in this “secret and hidden wisdom of God”.
  3. The Holy Spirit goes on to teach that this “secret and hidden wisdom of God” is accessible only to those who are spiritually mature in Christ. This portion of Scripture, 1 Cor 2:1 – 7, must be read together with James 3:13 – 18. James through the Holy Spirit, is also referring to this “secret and hidden wisdom of God” which he describes as wisdom that comes from above. The Holy Spirit through James adds that this wisdom is known by its humble deeds and good conduct that also reflects an understanding person.
  4. This secret and hidden wisdom of God is contrasted with the wisdom that is synonymous with “bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in the heart that denys the truth” (Jam 3:14). James goes on to describe this wisdom as being earthly, unspiritual and demonic. That last word should cause us to pause! The Spirit is teaching that unless a believer is sourcing from the wisdom that is above, which is the secret and hidden wisdom of God that is known by its humble and good deeds, they are sourcing from the natural and demonic.
  5. The hidden and secret wisdom of God is Christ Himself. Paul had earlier said in 1 Cor 1 and verse 24. “but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” So Christ Himself is the personification of God’s wisdom. And God’s wisdom in turn is reflected by what James says in Jam 3:17, “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere”.
